~コリントの信徒への手紙3:6~7 ~
「わたしは植え、アポロは水を注いだ。しかし、成長させてくださったのは神です。ですから、大切なのは、植える者でも水を注ぐ者でもなく、成長させてくださる神です。」
使徒言行録9章を読むと、紀元30年代の中頃、熱心なユダヤ教徒であったサウロはキリストを信じる者を捕縛するためダマスコへ向かう途中、復活された主イエスに出会い、劇的な回心をし、熱心なキリストを信じる者となる。その後、パウロと呼ばれ、1世紀中頃、ギリシャ・ローマ世界へ伝道活動をして歩き、ギリシャのアテネ、コリントという当時の商業文化の盛んな都市に教会の基礎を築いた。コリントの教会ではパウロが去った後、信徒の中に妬みや争いが起こり、「わたしはパウロにつく」「わたしはアポロにつく」などと言って、何人かの指導者の名を掲げた分派が生まれた。コリントの教会の出来事を通して教えられることは、わたしたちはいつも自分を中心に、自分を基準にして物事を考え、行動していないだろうかということだ。少しでも学力や知能が他者より優れていると、皆から注目され、敬われていると思い込み、いつの間にか舞い上がって、自らを誇る言動に出てしまいがち。わたしたちは自分の言動が高く評価されることを期待している。「わたしが植えたから成長したのよ」「うそ～、わたしが水をあげたからこそ成長したのよ」などと、各々自分のしたことをPRするのだ。自己PRは時として自己主張となり、さらには自己正当化へ、そして他者を否定する危険にもつながる要素を持っている。恐ろしい世の中である。

I planted, and Apollos poured out water. But it is God who has made it grow. So the important thing is neither the one who plants nor the one who pours water, but the one who makes it grow."
In Acts 9, we read that in the mid-30s A.D., Saul, a zealous Jew, was on his way to Damascus to arrest those who believed in Christ, when he encountered the risen Lord Jesus and had a dramatic conversion, becoming a zealous believer in Christ. Later, he was called Paul, and in the middle of the 1st century, he walked around evangelizing the Greek and Roman world, laying the foundation of the church in the Greek cities of Athens and Corinth, both of which had a thriving commercial culture at the time. In the church in Corinth, after Paul left, envy and strife arose among the believers, and a branch of the church was born with the names of several leaders, saying, "I will follow Paul," "I will follow Apollos," and so on. What we are taught through the events of the church in Corinth is that we are not always thinking and acting with ourselves at the center and with ourselves as the standard. If we are even slightly superior to others in academic ability or intelligence, we tend to think that we are noticed and respected by everyone else, and before we know it, we tend to get carried away and say or do things that make us proud of ourselves. We expect our words and actions to be highly valued. We each promote what we have done, saying things like, "It grew because I planted it," or "Oh, no, it grew because I watered it. Self-promotion sometimes becomes self-assertion, sometimes self-justification, and sometimes a danger of denying others. It is a frightening world we live in.
